Drinking coffee, listening to embarrassing singer-songwriters I loved when I was sixteen, cooking food, packing up all my earthly belongings into boxes ...

Wait, what?

In between working and painting, I am now beginning to move house. And as excited and happy as I am to be moving, and as happy as I am about gaining two lovely housemates; I am sad about losing my excessive wardrobe space.

You see, my clothing is currently stored in two huge wardrobes, six shelves, a blanket box, a tall chest of drawers and an entire spare room.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 354px; height: 375px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/S0KQNgyi_dI/AAAAAAAAATg/cr2b9GzU8U0/s400/wardrobe-room.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423055463122140626" /> Found via Atlantis Home.

I am now moving into a gorgeous little shoebox of a room with a wardrobe about half the size of one of my current closets. So I am on the hunt for another wardrobe, while also trying to cull my clothing as much as I possibly can ... read: not much.

So while I am plotting and planning my new room and my new wardrobe space, I've come across some incredibly unrealistic pictures of what I'd like it all to look like ...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 279px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/S0KRPtItHFI/AAAAAAAAATw/Xqt83aZp4ps/s400/1939165267_1f9afcc083_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423056600307670098" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 279px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/S0KRzJMyEOI/AAAAAAAAAT4/uVbqUMIRj1w/s400/1940003754_55d055a8bb_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423057209136386274" /> This is exactly what my wardrobe space would look like if I lived in a huge loft or ex-industrial space. I didn't feel that well on Sunday, and so I took myself to the doctor, who diagnosed me with ... BRONCHITIS. Ain't life grand.

It's always the way, though, isn't it? You finally complete something momentous and time-consuming, and then ta da! You get sick. I'm not feeling too bad though. Armed with pharmaceuticals and a lot of water, I should be just fine.

In other news, I love this dress. I suppose it's technically an overdress. It came with a white slip, but I decided to mix it up a bit and wear it with a pink petticoat. I also have a navy silk velvet ribbon I like to wear with this dress, around my waist. It wasn't a cheap dress - and shock! horror! it's not a vintage dress - but I had been looking for something similar for a long time, and when I saw that it was 75% off, I caved.

And it is the perfect dress for a summer picnic.

Embroidered lace detail.

Wearing:

• Lisa Brown lace overdress, bought in my hometown, of all places.
• Vintage neon pink petticoat, eBay.
• White thongs/flip flops/jandals, bought for as little money as possible. I could not be happier right now.

Pink was there too, and I'm so sad I didn't get a picture of his spectacular outfit, which, if I recall, combined white jeans, white Doc Martens, a plum-coloured velvet jacket and bow tie.

But I DID, naturally, manage to get photographs of my own outfit on the night. One of my beloved lecturers called it a "meringue", and I think that's about right.
• Red cotton socks, from a dollar shop!
• Spectator dance shoes, bought from a 50's repro shop when I was seventeen.
• Red headband, opshopped.
• 80's Ray-ban Wayfarers, eBay.
• Red 80's clutch handbag (unseen) which was my grandmother's.

Me with "the art", taken by my mother. I'm on another headdress kick at the moment - if you could see my eBay watch list! It's all feathers and 1920's fabric scraps as far as the eye can see.

I think calling this a tutorial is a bit of a stretch - it's just a rough sketch of the most basic way to make these little things. So feel free to improvise and improve on my methods if you choose to make your own headdress.

INGREDIENTS:

• One piece of ribbon or lace trim, cut to desired length of headdress.
• One piece of velvet ribbon, long enough to tie in a bow around your head.
• As many feathers as you want! I prefer to find and collect my own if I can, rather than buying them in packets.
• Sew-on rhinestones (optional)
• Sewing machine, thread, craft glue.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 195px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/SxIKbXJZpzI/AAAAAAAAARo/AZtGhlVouno/s400/hd-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409397567611578162" />

1. First, I put on some decent music. Today it was cLOUDDEAD. Then I arrange the feathers on a flat surface exactly the way I'd like them on the headdress.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 318px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/SxILO_33TnI/AAAAAAAAARw/CDLPx9x9PzE/s400/hd-3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409398454717206130" />

2. Then I thread the feather spines through the stitching on the back of the ribbon/lace trim, thus securing them a bit. Then I add a touch of glue at the stitching just to keep them in place. I let it dry.

3. Then I sew the velvet ribbon on the front of the trim, using them same colour thread as the ribbon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 292px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/SxIMPJ9xg1I/AAAAAAAAAR4/KrF0vaetrTs/s400/hd-4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409399556937974610" />

4. Then I hand-sew the rhinestones onto the ribbon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/SxINdIgTRpI/AAAAAAAAASA/ryHKRVnQceg/s400/hd-5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409400896575719058" />

5. The night before my assessment I was up until one or two in the morning with my boyfriend and two other painters hanging our work. It was tiring and nerve-wracking, but worth it. I've worked relentlessly this year, and I'm still not finished. Rather than making me sick to death of painting, working so hard for so long just has me keyed up ... and ready to keep going. I want to keep painting forever!

So, there you go. I've been a busy little Pony and an extremely neglectful blogger, but it's paid off tenfold.

How are all of your end-of-years going? Not too stressful I hope.

Onto the title of this post.

For all of my collecting, and wearing, of vintage clothing; for all of my love of vintage shoes and sunglasses and jewellery - I don't own much in the way of vintage headwear. Some beautiful vintage-clad girls can pull it off, but I always feel as though a vintage hat turns my outfits into historical looks, rather than quirky amalgams. But some vintage hats are so beautiful! I would love to be able to wear them without looking as though I'm trying to replicate a period look.

Apart from a veritable rainbow of berets, here is my teeny tiny vintage hat collection:

So many silly faces, so little time. Clockwise from top left: Men's WWII garrison hat (eBay), lipstick red 50's-60's 'Kangol' hat (opshopped in Dubbo, of all places), olive green velvet bow hat (eBay), 1950's gold leaf headband (eBay).

I love the olive green bow that I bought last week. I particularly want more of these headpieces. They're so lovely - and not too severe.

Lastly, thanks for all of your help with styling those new pieces of mine! I'll show you some looks I've pulled together in the next week or so.

AnnaKim Violette

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y4p7z0UkPvw/Sv9R88efAqI/AAAAAAAAAQM/skV652wUtp8/s400/annakimviolette-theselby.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404128185335874210" />

In lieu of my outfit posts, which I will hopefully resume in a week - following my final Honours assessment and subsequent hangover - I thought I'd leave you with a couple of pictures of AnnaKim Violette, a LA-based artist, and her staggering wardrobe. The precious few hours when I can guzzle cups of coffee, listen to Nina Simone's version of "Here Comes the Sun" and ignore the pressing feeling that I have nearly all of the time - the need to get out of the house and do something productive. Bliss. For the next hour or so, at least.

I have also been ignoring a pile of clothing on my floor for the past couple of days. The pile consists of pieces of clothing I've bought recently, but haven't quite figured out how to wear.

Like this olive green and neon pink Hawaiian concoction, for example. The shelf bust is a bit strange - in that it kinds of makes my chest look odd, not quite in a Madonna way, more in a Xena-Warrior-Princess-after-an-overabundance-of-Pina-Coladas way.

This dress poses the question: Can I pull off the "Peroxide Disney Princess" look?

And, um ... yes. I bought another one. I love them. I have a marching band problem. Not to be confused with a problem with marching bands. They're fine. If only I could wean myself off the damn jackets. But what, what, what in the world will I wear it with? That's a lot of w's. But you get what I'm sayin'.

How would you wear these lovely, slightly batty things?

HEADBANDS

I love to wear my scarves as headbands. And as I don't have time at the moment to bleach the roots of my hair, I've been wearing headbands almost every day, tied into a do-rag, a turban, or a flapper bow. These are couple of outfits showcasing two of the rainbow of scarves I bought while opshopping the other day.

In academic news, I've finished my damn thesis. It goes in tomorrow, and then I WASH MY HANDS OF IT. YAY. And then it's back to painting like a wildebeest being chased by a stampede. Or something. Anyway, I'm so close to the end of my degree I can almost taste it.

Almost.

This is what I wore to paint on Friday. The shirt is from a 1950's two-piece set I bought ages ago. I don't think it's ever been worn. The shorts are deadstock 70's Stubbies I also bought while opshopping this past week. It ended up being such a lovely day that I drank cheap beer on the grass outside and lolled around in the sunlight.

Wearing:
• 1950's strawberry print shirt, part of a two piece set.
• Mint green 'Stubbies' shorts, 1970's. Opshopped. They're beautiful quality, actually.
• Black stockings, supermarket?
• Rose pink scarf, opshopped.
• Black ballet flats from some cheapie store.

I wore this outfit - which is now one of my favourites, ever - last night to have dinner at a friend's place. I've been waiting to wear this supercrazy dress for ages. Every time the Boy is around and I pull it out of my wardrobe, he recoils with horror because it's so "goth". So I put it back. Last night I decided it was time to prove that I could wear it without looking as if I carve Robert Smith lyrics into gravestones every month during the full moon. I think I succeeded! Not that there's anything wrong with carving Robert Smith lyrics into gravestones during the full moon or anything. But you get my drift.

But holy bananas Batman, check out those sleeves. I love them so much!

With a cape. The perfect outerwear.

Wearing:

• Black lace 1960's mini dress, eBay.
• Yellow OTK socks, sockdreams.com.
• Black 80's oxfords, eBay.
• Vintage yellow scarf, opshopped, worn as headband.
• 1970's white knit cape, opshopped.

The Right Length

Note the tired, puffy eight a.m. face. I'm probably thinking: Guhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I wore this to work last weekend: I'd hemmed the dress, a 1950's seersucker sun dress, the night before. I've worn this dress a million times because I love it so much, but every time I've worn it I've sighed and tossed up whether I should take it up or not. I have an aversion to altering vintage clothing too much - it irks me to no end when I see beautiful 50's dresses shoddily machine-hemmed and sold as "mini dresses" in trendy eBay shops. So if I end up hemming a vintage dress (or if I'm very lucky, convincing my mother to do it for me and send it back to me) I try to do it properly and carefully.

Anyway, I'm wearing:

• 'Blue Juice' jacket.
• 1950's seersucker floral dress. eBay.
• Raspberry patterned tights, opshopped in my hometown.
• 80's granny boots, eBay.

Here is what the dress looked like before. This photograph was taken early last year:

I am so sorry for my long absences between posts. My thesisy thingy is due in a little over a week. My final painting assessment for Honours is looming. Between writing and painting, the only other things I do are eat and sleep. Sometimes I nearly fall asleep while eating. So bear with me :) I hope to be dressing up, flower picking and going tra-la-la very very soon.

I hope you're all doing well and are doing lovely things, gearing up for winter or summer, wherever you are.

SILK DOTS + KILLER BOOTS

Theeeeeesss is what I was wearing to go out last night, to eat Indian food and see some, um, noise bands. So I switched the lovely, painful boots for black ballet flats.

And the noise bands? Juust not my thing, I think. Please remind me of that next time I'm considering going to see one. Say, "No, Pony, you hate that shit with a vengeance. Go and eat some cake instead. To celebrate, I thought I'd post pictures of the opshopped treasures I found during my most recent stint in my hometown. Sorry for the bathroom shots -- my parents' house doesn't really have any clutter-free surfaces or walls.

This 70's pink petticoat. Finding decent petticoats in opshops is getting harder and harder ... I have been attempting to make one for AGES, but something has always gone a little bit wrong. Finally, I've cracked it!

These two are made from velvet & satin ribbons, rhinestones and feathers. I like them layered up, actually. I'd like to make more, in different tones, and layer them in ascending order, like pale blue, royal blue and violet. That might have to wait until after my assessment, however. After graduation.

In two days I go back to Canberra and it's head down, bum up until December. The thought kind of makes me want to cry. Because really, I just want to fly kites, make cakes, wear headdresses and feel this relaxed all day, every day, forever.

Using The Imagination

Some days you just want to play make-believe. Make-believe that it isn't blowing a gale outside. That you have money to burn. That it is summer two months too soon. Playing with Polyvore is fantastic for these kinds of days.

Other days, your trusty old G4 Powerbook decides to lay down and die, and you can't access your photographs for fear of killing it completely. So you borrow a Macbook and stare wistfully at your battered silver laptop lifeless on the table across from you.

Polyvore is perfect for these kinds of days too.

I went opshopping the other day and found some great stuff. I also bought an ivory lace dress with a bell sleeves that I am going to wear with a navy silk velvet ribbon tied around the waist. I also made a "baby headdress" from rhinestones, velvet ribbon & red-dyed feathers. But these will have to wait until I can safely get into my poor old computer.

Until then, I have two make-believe outfits. The first one I concocted quite some time ago, when it was freezing outside and I was dreaming of Spring. The other I made this morning, to sate my newly-found love of black and white, with splashes of colour. I bought the black and white Pamela Mann tights a while ago, but haven't received them yet. I can't wait.

Work and Play

Because my job - life modeling - often has specifications like "dress colourfully", "wear long drapery" and "wear stripes", my work outfits are usually quite fun to wear. Vintage biker jacket? Check. Boater hat? Yep! Black patent boots? Done. Military jacket? Why, yes! 1940's pyjamas? 1940's playsuit? Black cinch belt? Check, check, check. Iridescent sequinned cardigan? See below.

I'm lucky to have found such lovely versions of all the things I've wanted for a long time. And, well, I have very few 'wants' left. For now.

I'm sure I'll think of something.

What's on your clothing wishlist at the moment?

Okay, first of all, sorry for the photograph. The truth is, most of my overhead lights in my apartment have blown, and I'm too damn tiny/lazy to change the bulbs. Including my kitchen, where I normally take my outfit photographs. My solution - as my boyfriend duly noted - is just to move a lamp into the room. So I'm now cooking by the soft, atmospheric light of a single lamp, which is not exactly the ideal light for picture-taking. Or cooking, actually. Oh well.

So welcome to my crowded spare room, home of a random red chair Pink left here, and my little piano.

Sorry, really.

This is what I wore to go and see a production of West Side Story. I honestly don't think I'm a musical person. It was good, but so serious that I fell prey to the giggle loop for the whole three hours. I was laughing so hard at one point I had to bury my face in the boyfriend's jumper so I didn't make a noise. Did I mention it was while the main character was dying? By decent, I mean the full on Sgt Pepper deal. I also mean affordable, and not enormous enough to fit several large men and their respective paunches into it. This has been more difficult than you might think. So many of the jackets I've come across over the years have been seventy three times too big, or wayyy too expensive, too 80's, the wrong colours ... but now, I have found it. IT. the jacket. I added the buttons myself, ripped off the hideous panthers adorning its sleeves, and VIOLA! Heaven.

I really hated these panthers. Welcome to my squishy face of happiness.

This is a painting outfit. Though I did NOT wear the jacket while painting. You would not believe how much I love it ... I even tried to sleep in it. It was not comfortable.

Wearing:

• White Diesel glasses.
• Amazing amazing vintage band jacket, eBay.
• 1970's lace dress, Ebay. I was also over in sunny Alice Springs before that for 2 weeks or so, and in Newcastle and even Canberra and the snow for a month or so before that again! Hence the lack of blogging, I've been living out of a suitcase and haven't really been dressing too spectacularly. Or shopping a whole lot.

But regardless of that lets get onto the handful of outfits that I've managed to get pictures of in the meantime!

Right here is me in Newcastle, about to go out to a lovely pub for some delightfully alcoholic ginger beer and some fish.

I'm wearing shoes by Apostle, Levi Blacks, i forget what shirt I'm wearing but i get most of my button ups from myer. Some random bow tie, and a ladies Espirit bomber jacket (which I've worn more than just about anything else this winter)

This is my attempt at ponys least favourite clothes combination, one of my true loves, good old fashioned double denim! I always say that the most important thing to keep in mind with wearing 2 piece denim outfits is to keep the tones different, I'm being a bit daring here with the pants being regular acid wash and the jacket being REALLY SUPER HEAVY DUTY acid wash.

I tried to keep it a bit simple with the basic white shirt and blue and yellow trims. My only regret here being that I don't have a better pick of the shirts label, its a deadstock vintage "Dubbo Squash Club" muscle shirt from the 70s, and it is just amazing.

Shoes by Nike, Hoodie by American Aparell and everything else from your friendly neighbourhood op shop!

And lastly this is a pic of me today, It's a little boring, but I think the simplicity of it is nice. This is just my usual everyday street attire, simple matching colours topped off with a bit of a B Boy aesthetic. It also contains most of my favorite brands and things!

Classic low Nike Dunks, which are good for just about every occasion, white skinnies from good old American Apparel, Vintage 90s Yankees Bugs and Taz shirt! (how good is it! i fucking love anything like that!) Vintage 70s Adidas tracksuit top, and the icing on the cake! my brand new Supreme cap!

And this is me doing my best ever impression of Derek Zoolander when he gets told to act like a monkey during a shoot (and if you haven't seen Zoolander, well, what are you doing!). I couldn't find a clip of it on youtube that wasn't taken down! sorry friends!
